Click the Edit button of the VST Instruments window to open Proteus X. It s far more CPU-efficient to have multiple MIDI channels playing on one instance of Proteus X rather than to have multiple VSTi s running. Tip: Unlike some VSTi s, Proteus X is multitimbral, and able to play up to 16 MIDI channels at once. The input to the MIDI track is connected to E-MU Xboard 61, but the Output is not yet connected to anything. Take a look at the Inspector area on the left side of the Cubase LE project window. The VST Instruments window now looks like this. From the VST Instruments window that appears, select E-MU, ProteusX. Click the Devices menu, and select VST Instruments. Tip: If you have two or more hard disks, it s better to store audio files on a disk that isn t running your OS. From the Project menu, select Add Track, MIDI. From the Select directory dialog box that appears choose a location on your hard disk where you wish to store your audio files, and click OK. From the New Project dialog that appears, select Empty, and click OK. To Setup a MIDI Track with the Proteus X VSTi 1. Once you load a bank in Proteus X, you re ready to record. First, set up a MIDI track with the Proteus X VSTi. 4 E-MUĥ Running the Proteus X VSTi from Cubase LE Running the Proteus X VSTi from Cubase LE These instructions explain how to use Proteus X as a VSTi from within Cubase LE. Click OK to close the Device Setup screen. From the MIDI Input drop-down menu, select E-MU Xboard61. Click Default MIDI Port from the list on the left. Select Device Setup from the Devices menu. Cubase LE will remember these settings, so you ll only need to do this once. This way, when you create a new MIDI track, your Xboard will automatically be set as the input source. Setting Up the Xboard 61 in Cubase LE Follow these instructions to set up Cubase LE to use your Xboard 61 as the default MIDI input device. To access the Cubase LE documentation, click the Start menu, and select Programs, Steinberg Cubase LE, Documentation, and select the appropriate document. Consult the Cubase LE Operation Manual and/or your sound card s Operation Manual for help setting this up. You should skip this test, and configure Cubase LE to use the ASIO drivers for your sound card. When you run it for the first time, Cubase LE prompts you to test ASIO configuration. Xboard 61 Software Tutorial 3Ĥ Setting Up the Xboard 61 in Cubase LE Steinberg Cubase LE Steinberg Cubase LE is a 24-bit/96kHz multi-track audio/midi recorder with highquality effects, automation, virtual instruments (VSTi), and many other professional features. To install the Production Set, insert Disc 1 and follow the Install Shield Wizard s instructions. You ll probably want to install all three discs, along with the Xboard Performer Disc, to take full advantage of the professional sounds included with your Xboard 61. Production Sound Set This tutorial prompts you to load the Proteus X Composer Bank, which is located on Disc 1 of the Production Set. To install Proteus X, follow the instructions in the printed Proteus X Getting Started manual. Proteus X can be used as a VSTi in Cubase LE. Proteus X A professional desktop sound module based on the Proteus 2000 sound modules and Emulator samplers. Note: This tutorial assumes you re connecting your Xboard using USB. Make sure your Xboard is plugged in and turned on.
