Red roofs are nice but IMO they are a trend that comes and goes and as someone else says it drastically limits your choice of siding colours should you wish to change that in the future. The lower-end colours do fade over time, but there are some high-end (read: expensive) ones that are more durable. The coloured ones are galvalume that has been coated with a paint layer. As for the cell phone reception comment, this person may be confusing materials - while our house is being built we are living in a mobile home with a cheap aluminum roof (nothing like what we are putting on the new house) AND metal studs and yes, we have very poor cell reception in the home because we are essentially living in a Faraday cage! Finally, as for colour I chose to go with clear-coated galvalume. ![]() Also, if installed properly by a capable and knowledgable crew you should have absolutely no problems with leaks - that is an issue of flashing and installation, nothing to do with the metal roof itself. A good metal roof (just like everything there are cheap, crappy ones and good quality ones) will last your lifetime so is definitely worth the investment. And you can replace them 3 or more times over the same lifetime of a metal roof so not worth the savings in the long run. For one thing, those roofs leach chemicals into the water runoff so if you ever want to harvest your rainwater you can't. I would never, ever waste money on an asphalt roof. We are currently building a new house and after much research I chose a metal roof, for many reasons.
